Acupuncture for Knee Pain

Acupuncture for Knee PainAcupuncture can bring increased mobility and pain relief for the knee.

Acupuncture needles are intended to increase circulation and blood flow as well as release energy blockages. The acupuncturist will perform a new assessment at the start of each new visit to determine how much progress has been made in the patient.

Some acupuncturists will also use far infrared heat lamps as these allow heat to penetrate skin tissue and this is thought to further improve circulation for the patient. Other acupuncturists employ electro-stimulation at the knee injury site. This type of acupuncture reduces pain, swelling, inflammation, and muscle tension, while increasing mobility and blood flow for the patient.

Western scientists are not sure why acupuncture works to ease osteoarthritic knee pain but comparative studies of patients show it does bring much relief. Current theories involve endorphin and serotonin release. These substances within the body kill pain and helps with sleep and mood. As with other conditions, the longer a patient has suffered knee pain, the longer it will likely take to correct the problem. The best results for knee injuries happen when the patient can get to an acupuncturist within fourty-eight hours of the injury.

The acupuncturist will begin with a full exam and interview. In particular, he will want to know if the knee pain is acute or chronic as well as its cause (trauma, repetitive strain or degeneration) and the exact location of the pain. Sometimes knee pain is the result of a back, foot, or hip problem. This is called referred pain. All of these diagnostic details help determine which needles are used, where they are placed, and how long they should remain in the patient.
